The Lighthouse Keeper Books & Pulleys!

We were cuddled in bed and had just finished reading a Lighthouse Keeper book when my 4 year old asked me "mama, can we go on a boat ride?". Was it a giant coincidence that we saw boats on our trip to the beach the very next day? (I'm pretty sure they were used for deep sea diving expeditions though!). After my husband & I cringed ("aaw gawd, really? an actual boat ride? yikes! how cheesy!") I told him how cutely he'd asked for one the night before. ok FINE. For the love of books, let's go!

The Practical Mom: The Lighthouse Keeper Books & Pulleys!

Have you read The Lighhouse Keeper Books? It has Mr Grinling, the lighthouse keeper, who lives in a house on a hill on the sea side and he spends his nights at the lighthouse, so he can turn the light house on & off. Mrs Grenling therefore often sends him his meals in a basket through a pulley & rope, tied between the house & the lighthouse!

(Earlier I had made some colouring pages based
on some of his favorite books- check em out here!)

Since my 4 year old is so invested in the series (boat ride & all!) I created the Lighthouse and house (huh! easy peasy! with paper & a pringle can) but gave up as soon I realised making the pulley is a bit of handwork. I ordered a set of pulleys though (a super cheap one from India!) and then we were all set to go! The set is obviously a bit elaborate to teach a bit grown up kids about pulleys - with marbles as weights. (I only used one pulley & the bucket though!)

I placed the lighthouse near the window grill & the house on the BBQ- so the rope & pulley could be hooked up on both ends. And voila! My 4 year old could transport a variety of things to & fro!

And now memories from what triggered all this: Our cheesy boat ride!

Until later! Stay in touch!

  1. SO cute! We have a local lighthouse that families can sign up to be lighthouse keepers for a week. These books would be great to go along with that.

  6. I haven't been to a lighthouse in years since leaving Baltimore. I missed out on these books on account that my kids are older and are more into video games now but the books look and sound like a great series for young minds! Popping over from #coolmumclub
