Every time I read about kids obsessing over Legos I wonder what the fascination is about. Am I the only person who finds em utterly boring? My kid seems to share that view. I think. We have blocks and Legos that were gifted to us, but he has never really spent more than a few minutes at a time building anything. Instead of saying he isn't interested, it'll be more appropriate to say he isn't interested *yet*.
Anyways, we are moving countries, i.e. we need to get rid of most of the stuff we own. So without any hesitance I pulled out his wooden blocks and asked him to paint em because I remembered a similar project by Meri Cherry! (I couldn't find the exact permalink, but click here for her blog- a treat for your eyes!) They are not going to be used again anyways. Why not use em for an afternoon filled with creative activity.
Another thing I tried, to get him interested in block play is bring out Painted Jenga Blocks that were originally used as Montessori color tablets (There are 9 colors that have 7 shades each, i.e. 63 blocks - all of a different shade), his Little Genius Graded Square Tower (*affiliate) (that was to be arranged from biggest to smallest., so every square was of a different size and color too!) and some triangular blocks from paper I'd made, an idea straight from Babble Dabble Do!

These did the trick! maybe its the overall colorful-ness but he did get interested in building!
He first created a tall tower, and glued every block as he went along. Once the tower was tall enough, he allowed the glue to dry a little and then he painted the structure.
& here is is block play with painted Jenga blocks, graded square tower, paper triangles (& craft sticks!):

Cool ideas! My girls do play with their blocks, so I'd probably grab a secondhand set at a thrift store or something. They'd have fun with this, though. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by Bonnie :)
DeleteMy nieces and nephew would love this art project. I'd have to cover everything in old sheets or I'd end up with paint everywhere, but I could see them having so much fun with this. Will pin for later!
ReplyDeleteWe use a *Lot* of tarp! and apron! and old raggedy rags!
