Kids Art: Paint on Wood

I like walking into Hobby Ideas. Its not like I walk out with a bag full of stuff but I do manage to walk out with cute little something somethings. They have a collection of wooden frames, and last month I picked up a car shaped photo frame, a pen stand and a coupla Santas. Its perfect for the afternoons when I don't have anything planned. Just hand him over the frame, let him do the rest!

Painting a Wooden Pen Stand:

I'd once read a beautiful quote: "Art has a role in education of helping children become themselves, instead of more like everyone else." & I have to ALWAYS, ALWAYS keep that in mind!

For eg. For painting this pen stand, he began with orange and yellow. And then halfway decided to pour out some light blue. And then figured a little dark blue is required too! So if I were to see it from an "adults" point of view, it's probably haphazard, but if you see from his point of view, it's something he poured in all his effort into- and it seemed like this was exactly the intended outcome!

So when it comes to choice of colors, type of brush, what he does with them - is all up to HIM. Even if I'm sitting right next to him throughout the time. The only time I butt in with my suggestion is w.r.t the quantity of water for dilution of tempera paint.

And this pen stand is now being used on his bookshelf to store brushes!

Painting a Wooden Car Shaped Photo Frame:

Similarly, with the photo frame, he began with a bit of pink, but finally painted the whole frame dark blue.

I cut some old family photos and we together put in into the frame, and hung it with the others. He proudly showed it to everyone who came home!

Painting a Wooden Santa:

I'd kept out q-tips /earbuds, red & black paint, glue and some sequins (sequins were his BIG FAVE around Christmas!) He began painting white & red stripes on the candy cane - as it was on the Christmas tree decoration.

He said he'll paint the boots black, but when I got back after a bit, I saw he had painted an entire Santa black and an entire Santa red!

Art is about expressing himself and not someone else's ideas! So black Santa it is baby!

Then he carefully pasted sequins on the candy cane, and cotton for beard, and I pasted some googly eyes. We used these Santas for our Christmas decorations.

Just two Santas were enough to exhaust him! I have two more- which I'll prob use next year. Woudn't it be fun to compare the progress he has made in a years time!

  1. I loved watching my son find his creativity when we was a little one. He is still very creative at 25 years old, designing car parts and reconfiguring engine design. Plus, creative people are so interesting, don't you think! I would love if you would drop by and share this at my blog party, Celebrate It! Link up as many posts as you would like showing how you celebrate the big and small moments of your life!

  2. I love the Santas! I find it really hard not to micro-manage my kids when they are painting but actually the result is so much cuter when you just let them get on with it. Thanks so much for sharing with this weeks' Monday #pinitparty. I have pinned :)
