Magnetic Pop-Up Cards

Birthday cards, esp the ones made by kids are usually pinned to the fridge, so why not make a magnetic card that is created to be a fridge magnet!

My philosophy about division of actual work between parent and preschooler is 30/70, i.e. *at least* 70% of the work should be done by the child with not more than 30% help of the parent. (the ideas are of course the parent's!)

This is totally achievable for a super simple magnetic pop-up card. I did the cutting and folding while he did the drawing, sticking, glitter dust and writing. and Yes, if you don't have any 'fancy' aims, you can make a simple card very quickly!

Material Reqd:
For a super basic card: paper, glue, scissors, marker pens and a magnet. Then you can add glitter dust, colored match sticks for candles, sequins, etc.

Step 1: Cake:

I used felt. Asked him to draw a cake: two standing lines, one sleeping line, one smile, one sad smile, lines of candles and zig zag for cake decoration. Thats how he did it. Once an object is boiled down to simple shapes, it makes it doable in his mind to draw.

He spread some glue over it and sprinkled some glitter dust. Then used some coloured match sticks and sequins for the candles. I cut out this cake along the border.

Step 2: Card

He wrote "nani" (thats what he calls my mum!) on the other sheet of felt paper. He's 3.5 y.o. so obv I didn't make him write H-A-P-P-Y B-I-R-T-H-D-A-Y... that would've made a *very large* card!

Step 3: Why makes the cake pop

Then I cut a thin strip of paper and folded it at four places. This is placed & glue between the cake and the card. Alternatively, you can use a spring.

Step 4: Magnet

Then he squeezed some glue over the magnet and placed the card over it. He remembered our earlier session when I'd introduced magnets, so he spent some time chasing opposite poles and attracting a lotta paper clips!

  7. Another lovely idea!! Such a great way for relatives to show off and keep what the little ones have made for them! I know our family would love receiving these, as much as the children would love making them!
