I don't homeschool, So why do I bother with all this?
Because I like it
Because there are excellent resources available for free online
Because just 10 mins a week is enough (Yes, literally)
Because I know my son’s sensitive periods* the best
Because I can use what he has learnt every night during our reading time
Because I can make busy bags around these concept that serves as games and toys
*before you think it’s some sorta PMS-y thing, it’s not (!!) it is what Maria Montessori refers to as the period when a child is most receptive to learning a particular concept

If we would’ve continued school in India, he would’ve stepped into pre-kinder in June’15 itself, but he will be instead stepping into it in March’16. Which is actually okay given his age. So I had actually begun word building & some sight words (check out Fizzy Word Building & Fizzy Sight Words)long ago but gave it a break, since we was anyways going to learn it in school a bit later.
I’m beginning it again- and my two big resources that I rely on are:
(1) For Sight Words: The Measured Mom’s Sight Word Books. I took print outs and stapled em. Brought em over with us from Chile.
(2) For CVC (Consonant-vowel-consonant), short vowel words (such as M-A-T, P-E-N): Was actually Progressivephonics.com but it seems their domain name’s expired. Well, that’s really sad. I had printed all their books before leaving India though.
Color by WORD:
Yes this is a spin off of Color by Number. Lately he has been into solar system, so I drew a quick solar system, i.e. 9 circles and put a legend with colors against some basic short vowel A & E words (for e.g. M-A-T or P-E-N). He had to see what was the color against MAT and which planet has MAT written on.
He insisted on colouring The Earth blue *and* green though |
Our White board- used for memorising Spanish & Teaching Word Building :) |
Instead of red he coloured one blue.
Me: "LEG is supposed to be red!"
He: "But I like Blue!"....
Me: *mumble under my breath* "whatevs..!"

These are great ideas! Most of my kids went through Montessori (we owned a Montessori School for years) and loved making our own little booklets based on what they were learning. I've been homeschooling my three girls and they love color by number. I need to try the color by word with my kindergartner! Thanks for the tips!
ReplyDeleteI wish I'd known about color by word when my oldest two were learning to read. I'll have to try it with #3. This is a great resource. Would you please link up with us at Literacy Musing Mondays? #LMMLinkup http://www.foreverjoyful.net/?p=830
