Adding ANYTHING to paint makes it twice as fun. And adding it to a baking soda and vinegar Concoction resulting in a bubbling eruption can guarantee squeals of laughter and excitement!
We mixed a dollop of tempera paint with two teaspoons baking soda in each of the disposable plastic cups, arranged on a tray. In a beaker we poured some vinegar and few squirts of kitchen cleaner (to add a 'bubbly' effect). Then all he had to do was pour the vinegar into the plastic cups and voila! What happens is NaHCO3 + HC2H3O2 → NaC2H3O2 + H2O + CO2. (Or whatever that means!)
After an eruption we added another teaspoon of baking soda into the cups to watch it fizzle some more.
So now my 3 y.o, knows what is vinegar and baking soda (and that we are NOT mixing water with salt!!). He soon figured all steps and could do it on his own (while I fiddled with the camera settings!). After each round he would take the tray to the wash basin, pour out all liquid and do the experiment all over again.
For a session of a coupla rounds all you need is a 50 gms packet of baking soda, a litre of vinegar and paint. After we ran out and I went to get some more, and then I got to know some brands of vinegar come for as cheap as ₹25! (Less than $1) while I was using Heinz the first time *facepalm* !
