My 3 y.o. boy has absolutely straight hair and cannot do without a haircut at least once in three months without looking like a caveman! In Jakarta we LOVED going to Kiddy Kuts! They were experts at handling toddlers who need all the entertainment, patience and love.
Now he's big, so in Pune we just go to the neighbourhood men's salon that can turn shabby to chic in under $1 and 10 mins.
Anyway, I don't think cutting a guy's hair is rocket science (Gasp!). I'd cut my husband's hair a dozen times already (with a scissors) and thought we must buy a hair clipper and put it to use!
I bought a Remington HC5350 from online which has got only two razor guards, one ranging from 3mm- 18 mm and the second ranging from 21-42 mm. In all there are 14 different lengths that it can be set too. It can be both used cordless and corded and can be charged via cord or USB cable!
The first time was very confusing because I just couldn't figure what length to set the razor to (is 6 mm too short ? Is 12 mm too long? How about 42mm?). With an over enthu little fella you don't get too many attempts to experiment. So first I cut too long, and then I cut too short and he ended up with a super short crew cut to even out errors.
But second times a charm! After snipping his "bangs" with scissors, I happened to select the magic number of 18 mm and ran the razor smoothly all over the back and sides of his head within no time.
Then at 0mm I shaped his side burns and the margins at the nape of his neck.
The other learning from this attempt was to leave hair growing from the crown to the forehead long, cuz when cut short, that little crop tends to defy gravity! It's tricky cuz you still want a "boy cut" and not want to get stuck with "girly bangs"!
Let's face it boys, unless you have altered your style, people will notice your haircut only because it looks odd! So I was pleased as the result was a nice, neat crop of hair that "didn't look like a hair cut" although significant volume was snipped off!
Pleased also because my little boy who loves cleaning took the broom and dust pan on his own and cleared the balcony too!
PS: All the pics in this post were taken at the Friendly Neighbourhood Men's Salon! Taking pictures didn't cross my mind while I was doing the cutting myself! Sigh...maybe next time..

I have girls so a bit more difficult to do at home i am afraid. #pinitparty
ReplyDeleteLittle kids' cuts are pretty easy--the tricky part is when they don't want to stay still! I love doing haircuts at home!
ReplyDeleteBack in the day I remember my parents using a Flowbee to save money on haircuts for the 5 of us. LOL, some years the pictures would indicate not a professional job. Thank you for sharing with the Clever Chicks Blog Hop! I hope you’ll join us again next week!

ReplyDeleteThanks ladies for your wonderful comments! It is NOT an easy job which is why I sent him back to the salon for his regular haircut ;) I will try again, once I muster the courage and amass a mountain full of patience!
ReplyDeleteLittle man looks handsome with his new hair cut. I never had the gumption to try cutting my boys hair. I have a hard time cutting my own bangs straight. lol! Thanks for sharing with SYC.
