Learning Spanish with KEY WORD CUBES! (Practical Mondays #31)

{Disclaimer! The most annoying thing about learning a foreign language is that the moment you mug up a few words and are about to feel proud of it, a hundred more brand new ones pop out of nowhere. It.is.never.ending!!}

The Cubes:

It all started when I DIY-ed a Spanish/Hindi Color Cube by sticking post-its on my empty green tea box. My almost 5 year old would pull it out, toss it a coupla times, name the colors in Spanish and put it back. It made memorizing Colors in Spanish fun!

So I made Key Word Cubes {or ‘Cuboids’ for all you geometry nazis!} to go with the few books in Spanish that we’ve been reading. {I love cubes, yet I made make shift ones by wrapping green tea & medicine packets since I don’t have any blocks!}. I picked a few words from the book, such as brujas and fantasmas (i.e. witches & ghosts!) and drew them on a cube. It made reading the book AND learning new words fun!

The Books:

Have you tried the Busca en el Libro series? Here’s the publishers page (No affiliation!). We already had the English Edition of the Medieval Castle one and were quite excited to find a stack in the mall here in Santiago. “Busca en el Libro del Terror” takes you through witches, ghosts, headless men and possessed objects- great timing with Halloween around the corner! And on each page it gives you a task to busca  or look for various objects in the cluttered page.

We have Crocket Johnson's Harold & the Purple Crayon in Spanish- never owned it in English, but works for beginners Spanish. Lots of easy words, but I required spending time beforehand to translate!

And I love that Peppa Pig books are hugely popular- Not that my son is into Peppa anymore - but it has simple words and tenses! I can fake my way through the book without painstakingly translating words on spanishdict.com before hand! Yay!

And here is the make shift Color Cube, made by only sticking post-its on each side!

  2. Definitely a great idea for practising a new language! I use song cubes in my storytimes, where the kids roll of the cube to determine which songs we'll sing next - cubes have a lot of uses! :)

  4. Learning a new language may be tough for many. But did you know that this can be fun as well? And even kids can learn a new language in a fun way. This rings true if the intent is to learn the Spanish language and you want to guide your kids to this language. See more

  5. I used to review for The Old Schoolhouse Magazine, and my family got to use and review several different Spanish programs. Learning other languages is really fun, but it seems that the languages never really sticks since we don't use them on a daily basis. Those cubes look like a fun way for kids to learn! Thanks for linking up with LMMLinkup!
